2021 Unwritten Signature Series Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 3-Bottle-Box

Technical Notes

  • 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Single Vineyard Designate from Las Posadas vineyard from the Howell Mountain AVA

  • At about 2000 feet elevation, Las Posadas sits above the fog line, surrounded by a protected forest of fir and pine on Howell Mountain. Red Aiken soils are layered over white tufa, and the rocks that littered the site before it was planted now form walls defining the property.

  • Aged for 23 months in 100% new French Oak Barrels (Darnajou and Taransaud)
  • Harvested September 27th and October 4th, 2021
  • Bottled August 21, 2023
  • 50 Total Cases Produced

100 Points – Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Signature Series comes from the Las Posadas Vineyard on Howell Mountain and was raised 23 months in new barrels. As with the Oakville release, there’s just about none of this available, with just 50 cases produced, but wow, what a wine. Pure black fruits (currants, cassis), smoked tobacco, lead pencil/graphite, crushed stone, and bouquet garni notes define the aromatics, and it’s massively concentrated, with a dense, stacked mid-palate, laser-like precision, and building, ripe tannins. I certainly can’t see how this beauty could be any better it’s as good as any wine out there and stunning in every sense of the word. Hide bottles for 4-5 years (it will be interesting to see if this shuts down), and it should have 20-25 years of overall longevity. Winemaker Mark Porembski hit a homerun with these 2021s and if you get a chance to buy these wines, do it.

Tasting Notes

2021 was a perfect year for growing Cabernet in Napa. Limited rainfall the previous winter led to small and concentrated clusters.  Although the crops were low-yielding, the wines from 2021 are powerful and intense.

The 2021 Unwritten Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a quintessential Napa Valley Cabernet from an ideal vintage. It is replete with layers of density, spice, and umami. An inviting and aromatic nose of clove, peat, grilling spice, and crushed flower petals leads to an ultra-rich palate of dark berries, espresso, and graphite. Unctuous waves of structure reinforce the many layers of depth.  This wine is only in its infancy; it will easily last decades.  It is an exceptional choice to lay down for very special, future occasions.
